”人力車”．バネ付きで柔らかいビロードのクッションのついた座席と危険のなさは人力車を最も快適な乗物にする．それを曳くクーリー（車夫）は驚くべき敏捷な手足を持ち，１時間に３マイルから４マイルをたやすく走る．人力車は雨の場合や暑すぎて日差しを防ぐとき　．．．

睡眠．日本ではその入念に清潔な畳がすべての用途にかなっている．昼間はその上に座り夜はその上に寝る．寝るときは詰め物をしたマットレス（布団）が畳の上に敷かれ，寒い季節には大きな袖の付いた重い掛け布団が２，３枚寝具として使われる．これらは再び使うため　．．．
